Meet Sandy Lo, Author of The Watch Dog
I met Sandy Lo, author of the new book THE WATCH DOG, many years ago when she had just started Starshine Magazine, a popular entertainment online magazine. She took the music world by storm, helping to break out artists such as Taylor Swift, The Backstreet Boys, and 98 Degree. (Seriously, check out this story & old photo of Taylor Swift.) Over the years, I've followed her budding career as a publisher and then author, and was really excited to hear when her latest book was finished and ready for print.
What was more impressive, was that for THE WATCH DOG, Sandy picked up and moved from her native Staten Island, NY to the country music capital of the world, Nashville, TN. Not too many authors actually (can or do) relocate to the place which will serve as the setting of their book, but this is typical Sandy -- dedicated 110% to her craft.
When I got my hands on a copy of THE WATCH DOG, I couldn't put it down. Work was pushed aside, phones went unanswered, and my face was glued to my iPad until I finished the story of bad boy Garrett Baker. There was so many questions to be answers: With the help of his grandmother's long-gone dog, Brownie, would Rett be able to face his demons? Would his family & friends forgive him for all the pain he's caused them? Could Garrett finally accept his brother & his boyfriend? Could Rett find happiness--and did he deserve happiness after all?
Sandy weaves together an intriguing story, not afraid to tackle tough issues including bullying, autism, body image, homosexuality, abuse, loss... just to name a few. But the story is not heavy-handed. Each element plays an important role in the storytelling and it is given a satisfying ending.
Plus, there is the excitement of Nashville around every corner. But confession time: I am a little obsessed with Nashville right now. From the TV show I watch religiously each week on Hulu to Sandy's book, I am ready to kick on my cowgirl boots, grab me a cowboy, and sway to "When God Whispers," the song by Stacia Watkins featured in THE WATCH DOG.
That's one of the things I really liked about this novel--there is huge fun happening amid all the struggle, as you root for the character Cori and her music career.
But, I don't want to give too much away! So, get your hands on a copy of THE WATCH DOG & you won't be disappointed. If you're feeling lucky, enter our giveaway of an autographed copy here.
