Liz and Kate have been best friends for most of their lives. Kate is a dancer and Liz is “Photogirl." She loves photography and is at the top of her class. She is sharp and focused, able to capture exquisite moments through the lens of her camera. One night during a sleepover, Kate and Liz have a fight. Liz sleeps in her room and Kate crashes on Liz’s sofa. When Liz wakes up the next morning, Kate is gone and is giving Liz the cold-shoulder at school. No matter how many times Liz apologizes, Kate still acts distant.

It’s then that Liz finds out there is more to Kate’s distance than just their stupid fight. Kate claims that Liz’s brother, Michael, a boy she’s had a crush on for years, raped her that night while Liz slept upstairs. Mike claims he is innocent, but Kate presses charges and throws Liz’s life into a tail-spin. Everything she held close is gone, and she learns that like her photographs, not everything in life is black and white. There’s always a touch of grey in between.

This book is written in free-verse and is absolutely captivating. I was a little hesitant when I picked this one up. The premise intrigued me, but I wasn’t sure an entire book with this subject matter, written in verse would hold my attention, but it did. The book flows effortlessly, is wrought with emotion and every character is well-drawn. This book is very unique and perfect in every way. I cannot recommend it enough.
