The tumultuous years in a young woman’s life, once recorded on the pages of personal diaries, are now publicly posted on the virtual pages of social networking sites, and American culture is saturated with imagery depicting adolescents through reality shows, TV dramas, movies, magazines, and the internet. Photographer Kate Engelbrecht questioned the image of adolescent girls portrayed through these media outlets, and found herself wondering if we truly understand girls today, or do we simply consume what is fed to us? The Girl Project was born out of her curiosity about contemporary teenage girls, and whether their lives differ that greatly from previous generations due to today’s media influence. In PLEASE READ (if at all possible): THE GIRL PROJECT, Engelbrecht has reached out directly to the source for answers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Kate Engelbrecht holds a B. A. in sociology from The College of Saint Catherine. In 2001 she started Kate Engelbrecht Photography in New York City, and soon earned a reputation for her personal and intimate approach to her subjects. Her work has appeared in PDN, Time Out New York Kids, and The Knot. A dominant theme in her work is reality—her ability to reveal people’s true selves and experiences. It is this motivation that inspired her to begin The Girl Project.
