  Interview with Shannon Hale

Austenland, Melted Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Highlights

Shannon is the author of Austenland, a Bloomsbury USA book.

What are 3 words that sum up your book, Austenland?
Men in breeches.

When did you start writing Austenland and where were you in your writing career at that point?
I first had the idea 10 years ago as a lowly English major. I began to write it in 2000 between drafts of The Goose Girl, which eventually became my first published novel. I love working on two projects at once, very different projects. I think it keeps my writing fresh. So for Austenland I used a different narrator than Goose Girl, used a contemporary setting, and just had fun. I had no expectations that it would ever see print. I wrote it as a writing exercise, and I wrote it because the story just would not leave me alone.

A favorite question from our audience...if Austenland was made into a motion picture, who would you want to play the main characters and why?
Funny you should ask…this is the first book I’ve actually been able to cast in my mind (though not until after I was finished writing, of course, or the idea of the actors would interfere with the characters). Here’s a list I wrote up:

  • Jane Hayes - Minnie Driver (love her, funny and classy and real)
  • Aunt Saffronia - Sophie Thomspon (amazing character actress)
  • Miss Heartwright - Emma Thompson or Glenn Close (both too fab for words)
  • Miss Charming - Jennifer Coolidge (she absolutely slays me in Best in Show)
  • Mrs. Wattlesbrook - Jennifer Saunders (fabulous half of French and Saunders)
  • Mr. Nobley - I can't cast this one. I tried but I simply can't. The obvious choice is impossible and knowing that makes me weep, weep...
  • Colonel Andrews - Joseph Fiennes (yes, please)
  • Martin - my husband suggested "Wolverine," and I have to agree that Hugh Jackman would be very nice
  • Sir John Templeton - Jim Broadbent
  • George East - Tom Welling comes to mind

What audience do you think will identify best with the book?
I never know this. It often surprises me. I write for myself alone and then roll that book out there and see who wants to play ball. From early reactions, I’d say literary folk who enjoy laughing and have the ability to fall ridiculously in love with book characters.

Is there a certain ritual you go through while writing (a favorite place, soundtrack, snack, etc...)?
I sit my butt down and I try to write. I’m a mother of small children, so I pretty much just grab any moment that the universe grants me. Right now my baby is napping and my toddler is at pre-school. And by the way, they’re uber cute.

Tell us about your family and background.
Ack! Um…huge question, little time. I’m in Salt Lake City, Utah and I’m one of five kids. And I like to eat chocolate chips melted in a mug.

Did writing come naturally to you, or is it something you've worked at?
I work very hard. This is the hardest work I’ve ever done. I do many drafts until a book gets to the point where it will seem natural.

Besides your obvious talent for writing, do you have any other cool, possibly hidden talents?
Why thank you. I have a supernatural ability to take lovely driver’s license photos. I can take a stroller up and down escalators with ease. I can wear pink (this is a new ability, just this past year actually).

Are you currently writing anything? If so, what….
I’m always writing something. I’m too obsessed to take a break. My husband and I are co-writing a series of graphic novels. The first, Rapunzel’s Revenge, puts Rapunzel in the Old West, where she uses her braids as whip and lasso. It’s a good time. I have a new young adult fairy tale novel coming out in October, Book of a Thousand Days. I’m just so pleased with it, and if you’ll permit me to squeal with delight, most everyone who’s read it says it’s their favorite of my novels (squee!).

If there was one thing you'd want your readers to know about you, what would that be?
I’m not naturally this lovely. My highlights are artificial.

Thank you!
